Becoming A Competition Dancer
How do I begin competing? If you would like to compete in a dance competition, begin by letting your instructor know. He or she will tell you more about the kind of competitions offered and where they are located. There are competitions every week of the year somewhere in the United States! There are even competitions in Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and Cancun! Whether you compete as a hobby that brings you to exotic places or because you enjoy the thrill of competition, there is something for everyone. Who do I compete with? You can dance as a pro-am, with your instructor, or you can dance with an amateur partner. Dancing with a pro is a great way to get better faster, and you can share the cost of lessons with an amateur partner. Either way, there are events available at competitions for both. What dances do I do? Dances are divided into categories based on particular styles. Here are the dance categories:
You can dance any or all of these dances, but usually people pick a couple of dance styles on which to concentrate. Who will I be competing against? You will only compete with people that are at your dance level and your age level. Competition is available for those age 5 to 95! And the levels begin at Newcomer and go to the highest level, which is the Open level. What do I wear in a competition? The right costumes are very important in competition. Ballgowns and Latin dresses are for the ladies and tail suits and Latin costumes are for the men. Proper attire is required in the competitions. Costumes are often custom made for the individual dancer to assure a good fit. They can be simple or highly decorated. The choice is yours! Ladies and some gentlemen’s costumes are available at Champion Ballroom through Champion Dresses. You can see more information about costuming at Champion Dresses. What shoes do I wear? Champion Ballroom carries shoes for all styles. Please go to Champion Shoes for more info on ordering shoes. |
