West Coast Swing - American Style
The West Coast Swing was born out of the need for a dance that did not take up much room. It is directly related to the East Coast Swing, but it is danced in a “Slot”. The West Coast Swing also has the same basic changes of rhythm than the East Coast Swing has, but can take up much less space. This encourages more individuality from the partners. It is different in that is smooth rather than danced with a bounce, and the Lady does most of the movement. It can be danced to a great variety of music and tempos, making it another reason to be such a popular dance. The West Coast Swing is directly related to the East Coast Swing and was undoubtedly born due to the style of music being played in the 1940’s and the need for a dance that did not take up so much room. The west Coast Swing has evolved into a “Slot” dance that allows more dancers into a small area, but encourages more individuality from the participants. Popular patterns include:
